Why the Bow Tie?

Why the Bow Tie?

Ever wonder why Mel wears a bow tie? One of the questions I get all the time is, "You're the bow tie guy. Why do you wear the bow tie?” The bow tie to me is a throwback to a time where good customer service was the expectation, and customer service was delivered face-to-face with a handshake, with a smile. At Sams CPA, we marry modern technology with timeless principles of how to do business right and how to take care of our clients.

Video Transcript - Why the Bow Tie?

It's time to get down to the Brass Tacks. My name is Mel Sams. I'm the managing associate at Sams CPA. And today I'd like to talk to you about why the bow tie. We're going to do a little bit of freestyling today. We put out these videos which I hope you've enjoyed, and I hope you've gotten a lot of good information out of them.

One of the questions I get all the time is, "You're the bow tie guy. Why do you wear the bow tie? We always see you with a bow tie." And I had to think about it a little bit, but what I realized was that to me, I started wearing the bow tie many years ago, and at the time, it was more of a statement, making a statement against what I saw the trends in business, where bad customer service has become the expectation.

Think about it for a minute. You're shocked when you get good service from somebody. Whether it's from the IRS, whether it's from calling customer support of some big corporation, or even just at the grocery store or in line somewhere. We have come to expect poor service. And that's not a knock on the people delivering the service necessarily. I think it's just a knock on the process and corporate culture and other things, and the bow tie to me is a throwback to a time where good customer service was the expectation, and customer service was delivered face-to-face with a handshake, with a smile.

We're not perfect. We certainly make mistakes like anyone else, but when we do, you would be talking directly to me and my first question to you is, "How am I going to work this out for you? How am I going to make this better? Give me a chance to make this right for you." That's our philosophy. We tackle those opportunities head-on, an opportunity to learn and to do better by our clients. And the bow tie for me just says that even though we embrace modern technology, even though we utilize it, we're on the bleeding edge.

As you can see, I use the Apple pencil on my tablet. When I'm meeting with my clients, I'm taking notes. I save that directly into our paperless system so that we can quickly deliver the service we need to. But you know what? Sometimes the old fountain pen is a classic standby. I put this thing down and I use this. Again, it's a timeless instrument of quality and of care, and that's what we do at Sams CPA. We marry the two, modern technology with timeless principles of how to do business right and how to take care of our clients.
